How Tracking Accuracy Works

Understand the precision of GPS-based tracking and what affects accuracy.

Overview

Borderly uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and cell tower data (the same data your iPhone uses for Maps) to determine your location. For the purpose of day tracking, you only need to be accurate enough to determine which state or country you are in — not your exact street address.

Accuracy Levels

Each presence record includes an accuracy measurement. In most cases, accuracy is well within the range needed to determine your jurisdiction. Even in areas with poor GPS reception (such as dense cities or indoors), Wi-Fi and cell tower data provide sufficient accuracy.

Near State or Country Borders

If you live or work very close to a state or country border, the app may occasionally record the wrong jurisdiction. This is rare, but if it happens, you can easily correct it with a manual entry.

Borderly records multiple data points throughout the day and uses the most reliable one for your daily jurisdiction assignment.
