Tracking and Changing Your Domicile

Understand what domicile means in Borderly and how to update it when you move.

Individual

What Is Domicile?

Your domicile is your primary legal residence — the place you consider your permanent home. For tax purposes, domicile is different from simply being physically present somewhere. It involves intent to remain.

Borderly tracks your domicile history over time, so you have a clear record of when you established and changed your primary residence.

Viewing Your Domicile

Go to Domicile in the sidebar to see your current domicile and a timeline of past domicile changes. Your current domicile is highlighted with a "Current" badge.

Changing Your Domicile

When you move to a new state or country and want to change your domicile:

1

Go to Domicile

Open the Domicile section from the sidebar.

2

Tap "Change Domicile"

Start the domicile change process.

3

Select your new jurisdiction

Choose the state, province, or country you are establishing as your new primary residence.

4

Set the effective date

Choose the date your new domicile takes effect (for example, the date you moved).

5

Add a reason (optional)

Enter why you are changing domicile — for example, "relocated for work" or "establishing Florida residency." This is for your records only.

6

Confirm

Borderly updates your domicile and automatically creates a domicile establishment goal for your new jurisdiction (default: 183 days). You can adjust this goal after creation.

When you change your domicile, Borderly automatically closes your previous domicile record and deactivates any old domicile establishment goals.
